National Day of “Ochi“

Today is “Ohi Day” (Pronounced “Ochi Day” or “Epéteios tou Óchi” in Greek), one of the National Days of our country.

It is the Anniversary of the “Ochi“ (meaning “No” in Greek). It honours Greece's rejection of the ultimatum issued by Italy on October 28, 1940, and the subsequent Greek counterattack against the invading Italian forces in Pindos mountains during the Greco-Italian War and, thus, Greece's entry into World War II.

Happy National Day, Greece!

Monday, October 28, 1940 -
I went to bed at two in the morning, reading Makrygiannis. At half past three, a voice on the phone woke me up: ‘We are at war’. Nothing else, the world had changed.
