A tiny jewel-beach in Athens - Mikri Chamolia

WORTH THE TRIP WHILE IN ATHENS

There is a beach, which you can reach in less than an hour from the centre of Athens and which has many peculiarities:

  • First of all, it seems to belong to an island more than to Attica.

  • It has turquoise, fantastic waters and a small sandy beach with a few pebbles.

  • This is one of...at least 5 beaches sharing the same name within 10 minutes distance by car. You'll even find travel articles online describing this beach, while displaying another one in the photos!
Let's agree here that this one is "Mikri Chamolia" beach.

  • Due to its morphology, it is so sheltered that you would have to be extremely unlucky to encounter waves.

  • It is very close to the runway of the "Eleftherios Venizelos" International Airport and so you can constantly see planes taking off over your head (which I like a lot, but some people may find it annoying).

  • The beach is so small that you can barely fit 20 or so people on top of each other. In other words, more than 10 people is considered a crowd.

WHAT A MESS

All along the coastline here you will find numerous coves and small bays with wonderful waters for swimming and this may explain the…laziness of the locals with the names.

This is the right one that this post is about.

But these are also called “Chamolia”:

1, 2, 3, 4.

Go figure.

The beach is facing Vravrona (or Braurona or Brauron), with its important archaeological site, and a little further on you will find the vast beach of Artemida (or Loutsa for the locals), a very popular -and somewhat banal these days- swimming destination for more than 50 years.

The beach, as you can tell by the photos, has no facilities or any kind of organisation, so be sure to bring the essentials with you.

And you, Iphigeneia, beside the holy stairs of Brauron you must hold the keys for the goddess herself: where you will die and be buried
— Euripides, Iphigeneia among the Taurians

Access is as follows:

  • Park your car here. Basically, this is the area in front of the fish tavern called (you guessed it) "Chamolia fish tavern".

  • Bring water, food and an umbrella.

  • You walk by the sea on the clearly marked path for less than 10 minutes, depending on your condition and the weight you are carrying.

  • You arrive here.

  • Enjoy.
