Short trip to Methana

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

One of the advantages of living in such a beautiful country like Greece is that, very close to where you live (no matter where exactly), there are countless options for nearby getaways. As a result, locations that would likely be major tourist destinations elsewhere are essentially ignored here.

One such off the beaten path destination is Methana.

VOLCANO LAND

Methana is a peninsula near Poros. Because it is connected by a narrow 300m strip of land to the rest of Peloponnese, many people think it is an island. This place is one end of the volcanic arc of the South Aegean (which includes Nisyros, Milos and Santorini) and the volcano in the village of Kameni Chora is considered active. The last eruption took place in 240 BC and was described by Strabo and Pausanias.

Volcanoes created the atmosphere that we need for breathing.

THAT SMELL

At the same time it is considered one of the most important geothermal fields in the country and is also famous for its thermal baths. There are 3 springs, the most famous being the one at the entrance of Methana town. Here the water gushes out rich in hydrogen sulphide from cracks in the white limestone, into a small lake which communicates with the sea. The temperature of the water varies between 27,0 °C and 34,4 °C. If you can get over the really strong smell—which I wouldn't characterise as pleasant—it's worth swimming here, if just to have the experience.

If you ever find yourself in Methana, keep in mind that there are over 60km of marked trails! This is a hiker's paradise.

Finally, if you really want a peaceful holiday or fresh fish, then I would highly recommend the picturesque Vathi. Here it's hard to believe you're not on an island.

You can get here from Athens in about 2 hours, either by car or by ferry!
