Bialystok

A HISTORICAL, BEAUTIFUL CITY YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF

Bialystok (Białystok) is the second most populous city in Poland and is located about 200 kilometres northeast of Warsaw.

In old Polish, biały stok means white river.

City’s population is currently estimated at around 300,000 inhabitants.

It is believed to have been founded by Gediminas, grand duke of Lithuania, around 1320.

At the beginning of World War II, the city had a population of 100,000 inhabitants, of which about 40,000 were Jews.

Between 1941-44 the Germans killed half the inhabitants, including all the Jews in the ghetto, and destroyed 3/4 of the industry and buildings.

Today, the city lives mainly from textiles, electronics manufacturing, meat processing, etc. The Branicki Palace, renovated after the Germans burned it down in 1944, houses a medical academy.

I found myself here, on my way to Lithuania and I stayed for just one day.

The town is pleasant, with few tourists and offers a sense of calm and relaxation. A nice stop for a few days.
