Hydra island is famous in Greece as one of the places that "jet-setters" prefer when visiting Greece. Oddly enough, it is not known for its sunsets, that they are quite spectacular. I spend there three summers and watched too many sunsets. The sun had just hidden behind the ridge of the Peloponnese Mountains, during my birthday. Hydra, Greece.
Every visitor of the island of Lemnos must definitely go up to the castle and admire the sunset. The lucky ones will be able to see far away the silhouette of the sacred Mount Athos. If extremely lucky, like me, the visitor will also see wonderful colors, the still sea and a lonely boat sailing. Lemnos, Greece.
The small island of Kounoupa, which is accessible only by sea, could be described as a small paradise on earth in the middle of the Aegean Sea with its crystal clear waters. The main beach is actually a narrow strip of land that joins one side of the island to the other, forming two beaches on either side. Astipalaia, Greece.
Panagia Chozoviotissa is an orthodox monastery. It is built at an altitude of 300 meters. The reason for its construction was the discovery of an icon from Hozovo or Hozova (now Wadi Kelt, Palestine). According to local tradition, the icon of Panagia Hozoviotissa arrived at the time of Iconoclasm by sea in the bay of Agia Anna, near the monastery. The monastery is believed to have been built in the 9th century, at the time of the icon's arrival. The Emperor Alexios I Komnenos granted royal chrysobull crusading rights to the monastery in 1088. Because of its dimensions (40meters length and 5 meters width) it was given the title "The Monastery of One Wall". Amorgos, Greece.
Aerial view of the sunrise on the Chapel of Panagia Kakaviotissa. It was named Kakaviotissa after the mountain Kakavo on which the chapel is located. It is the world's only roofless church, which is built in a cave (actually it is not a cave, but a recess formed by the rocks). Lemnos, Greece.
