PINDOS KID

The Velouchi is the top of the mountain Tymfristos, with an altitude of 2.315m., thus ranking it in the 16th position of the corresponding list of the highest mountains of our country. The mountain is part of the Pindos mountain range.

Today, the mountain itself is called so, with the name:

  • being derived either from Velos (meaning arrow), as the Aetolian archers were known for harassing the invading pre-Christian Celts and Persians with their famous archery. See The Greek and Macedonian Art of War, by F.E. Adcock, 1962.

  • or be of Slavic origin for “white mountain“.

It is first found in writing in 1453, so the second explanation is probably more likely. Today, both names are commonly used, i.e. Tymphristos (Velouchi).

The Karpenissi Ski Centre, with its pistes and chalet, is located here, at an altitude of 1,840 metres, at the location "Diabolotopos" (meaning "the devil's place"), at a distance of about 13km from Karpenissi. It is the first ski resort in Greece, founded by private individuals in 1974.

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.
— JOHN RUSKIN

During my visit, which only lasted an hour or so, I just wandered around in the snow taking pictures. Despite being born at the foot of the magic mountain of Parnassus, I never became a fan of winter sports.

But walking in nature, combined with the strange human constructions is something I am drawn to photographically and would gladly do it again.
